Meet Sania Mirza, No. 1 Indian’s Female Tennis Athlete

In the context of professional sport tournament, India is a tough competitor of every participant country. The quality of athletes who able to break some medals is literally no joke. And that achievement is diverse in numerous sports, including cricket, tennis, badminton, and many more. One of the best athlete ever that belongs to Indian is Sania Mirza. Even though she has retired now, but her dedication will be remembered by this nation and the world. Before Sania’s era, India had no significant achievement in tennis field. Specifically, the top 50 WTA rank in individual categories was never filled by Indian athletes. Thanks to Sania, now India has gold medal in grand slam tournament in fourth round U.S Open in 1995.


She started her career in 2003 by winning Wimbledon Championship. In 2005, she marked the title of becoming first Indian woman who won Grand Slam U.S Open, Australia Open, and also got her first WTA single title claimed the Hyderabad Open.

It kept going on until few years later. But, Sania did not only prioritize her career in tennis field. However, she also concerned with education at It was proven in 2008 by her Doctor of Letters’ honorary degree from MGR Educational and Research Institute University in Chennai. At the same year, she broke quarter final round at Hobart in third round Australia Open. In mixed doubles category with Mahesh Bhupathi as partner, they were able to get runner up title.

In the following year, 2009, she got her very first Grand Slam achievement at Australia Open, together with Mahesh Bhupathi in mixed doubles tournament. Not feeling enough, she was also ambitious enough to be the champion in Pattaya Women’s Open Tournament but ended up in final and got her runner up title.

Besides the open tournaments, she honored by various awards due to her brilliance in the field. 2004 was her time to receive Arjuna Award from the Government of India, followed by Padma Shri in 2006. Padma Shri is one of the highest awards dedicated to every single tennis player.

Along with this outstanding title, no wonder if until now, Sania Mirza still get the spotlight from public. It is not merely about the sign of curiosity like common celebrity, but as a thank you sign from local people because she makes India to be respected as powerhouse of tennis tournament.
